COVEN: Haunt + Nocturnal Femme Concert

Presented by contributor Alie Stewart and featuring DiZines Founding Members Rhu Blue and Wyatt Scott.

The “witch hunt” where women gather to plot, sharpen their teeth, and choose who to sacrifice next will descend on Cannery Hall on October 30 from 8:30 PM to midnight. Inspired by Sleep No More and Nashville’s booming goth scene, this powerhouse lineup is produced by Emmy-nominated producer Alie Stewart and Nashville talent buyer and artist representative T Tucker. This night’s pillars are CREEPY, HORNY, and EMPOWERED, bringing guests an experience that is surely something to howl at. This isn’t a typical concert. It’s an experiential haunt, a genre-bending performance art piece woven into a live music showcase. Immersive, unpredictable, and designed to be felt. This is a gathering built for its community. Proceeds will support the American Red Cross, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and Healthy and Free TN. Dress in your best Halloween costume, or at least slutty.

Henry Rollins: Cool Evidence at RADAR615 - Day 1

Captured Moments From The Last Century: November 6th and 7th at RADAR615

2-9pm both days

Hello, Henry Rollins here. I wrote the following in an effort to somehow entice you to come to this event. An incredible amount of time, effort and expenditure has gone into this. I’ve either gotten it extremely right, or catastrophically wrong!

For many years, I’ve been fascinated with historical markers. Physical objects that still remain years after they were created, become irrefutable evidence of time and place. Memories fade and retelling of facts often leads to distortion. However, the genuine article remains unperturbed.

Cool Evidence exhibit—I’ve anthropomorphized Time. I think Time seeks to obliterate the past and make the future all but completely speculative in an effort to keep us in the present, where it can be the center of attention. This is why carbon-based artifacts turn to dust, and that which came before can completely disappear, unless there are those who choose to be careful and patient guardians of the past. They seek to slow down decay and keep the facts intact. While I don’t consider Time to be my enemy, I’d like to think it considers me a constant and persistent annoyance.

Humans are capable of the worst things the planet has ever endured. I try to focus on the truly great, epically inspired aspects of humanity. Everything in the Cool Evidence exhibit denotes a time and place, be it an event, or just the fraction of a second it takes for a camera to extract an image—forcing a testimony from Time that humans can be exceptional. There’s always an alternative to misery. The Cool Evidence exhibit is the proof.

On display will be things from the 70s-80s Washington DC music scene, tour posters and photos of Black Flag, the Damned, the Cramps, from Lux and Ivy’s personal collection, Iggy Pop, the Stooges and more.

Thanks for reading this,

Henry

Obscuring, Revealing | Contemporary Photography in Nashville closes

Obscuring, Revealing brings together a varied group of Nashville-based photographers who are testing the boundaries of documentary practice. Through personal narrative, formal experimentation, historical allusion, alternative processes and even the blurring of fact and fiction, these artists offer complex and provocative pictures of contemporary life, prompting reflection on what photography makes visible and what it obscures. The exhibition highlights the work being made by photographers in and around Nashville while inviting visitors to rethink the possibilities of documentary photography.

Exhibiting artists include Caroline Allison, Sam Angel, Carolyn Benedict Fraser, Arielle Gray, Allie Horick, Stacey Kranitz, Jack Latham, Armon Means, Vesna Pavlovic, Kristine Potter, Tamara Reynolds and Christine Rogers. Pavlovic and Reynolds are Vanderbilt Studio Arts faculty.

The show runs October 19 through December 4 at the Leu Gallery in the Lila D. Bunch Library at Belmont University, with a reception on October 22 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Abscission by Torey Akers at COOP Gallery closes

Abscission by Torey Akers at COOP Gallery closes

COOP is pleased to present Abscission, a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist, Torey Akers.  Abscission interrogates desire in material terms, using want, rather than need, to unearth the buried histories of non-normative intimacy. The word “abscission” refers to the natural detachment of the ripe and wilting portions of fruited plants, a process that underscores the painful science of growth and self-determination.

In a political era defined by the algorithmic construction of fear, Abscission reflects the universality in the specific, taking on the mantle of the Renaissance-era erotic nude—simultaneously coy and brazen, exploited and self-referential—by transforming awkwardness into adoration through touch.

Akers is less invested in the gender binary or corporatized notions of ‘body positivity.’ Instead, her work is informed by compositional intervention in biopolitic, by gesture as a form of devotion. The artwork in Abscission operates in a visual modality just to the left of sentimental, depicting what it’s like to miss somebody, real or imagined, at the end of the world.
